Something about the door stops

Something about the door stops
First, we have a glancing look at the door stops. A Doorstop is an object or device used to hold a door open or closed, or to prevent a door from opening too widely. Alternately, a doorstop could be a thin slat built inside a door frame to prevent a door from swinging through when closed. It is be divided two types by the functions. Holding Doors Open
A door may be held open by a door stop which is simply a heavy solid object, such as a brick, placed in the path of the door. These stops are predominantly
improvised. Historically, lead bricks have been popular choices when available. However, as the toxic nature of lead has been revealed, this use has been strongly discouraged. Another method is to use a door stop which is a small wedge of wood, rubber, plastic, cotton or another material. Manufactured wedges of these materials are commonly available. The wedge is kicked into position and the downward force of the door, now jammed upwards, onto the door stop provides enough static friction to keep it motionless. A third strategy is to equip the door itself with a stopping mechanism. In this case, a short metal bar capped with rubber, or another high friction material, is attached to a hinge near the bottom of the door opposite the door hinge and on the side of the door which is in the direction that it closes. When the door is to be kept open, the bar is swung down so that the rubber end touches the floor. In this configuration, further movement of the door towards being closed increases the force on the rubber end, thereby increasing the frictional force which opposes the movement. When the door is to be closed, the stop is released by pushing the door slightly more open which releases the stop and allows it to be flipped upwards. A newer version of equipping the door with the stopping mechanism is to attach a magnet to the bottom of the door on the side which opens outward which then latches onto another magnet or magnetic material on the wall or a small hub on the floor. The magnet must be strong enough to hold the weight of the door, but weak enough to be easily detached from the wall or hub.
Preventing Damage by Doors
Another type of door stop is used to prevent doors from opening too far and damaging nearby walls. In this case a short length of rubber-tipped wood or metal is screwed into either the wall or the floor in the path of the door. If it is attached to the wall, it may be either a few inches above the ground, or at such a height as to meet the doorknob. On occasion, stops are used that are fitted at the midpoint of the door, as part of the central door-hinge. Such a stop is known as a "hinge pin”. But usually we divided them into a detail type by different kinds. There are many different kinds in today’s market. Let me have a look:
1. Solid base- usually brass; comes in different lengths, with rubber tip to prevent marring wall or door. It can be mounted onto door or into the wall. Installation- just screws in once you have determined where you want it placed.
2. Flexible spring base- usually brass; comes in different lengths, with rubber tip to prevent marring wall or door. It can be mounted onto door or into the wall. Installation- This type is also screwed in.
3. Solid one piece- usually white, safety door stop. It does not have a removable rubber tip on the end. This is a good doorstop for households that have small children. It prevents a choking hazard. This type you can mount to the wall or door simply by screwing it in.
4. Hinge pin- usually brass. You remove the hinge pin in your door and insert door stop, then reinsert the hinge pin. This type is easily adjusted to limit door opening. The hinge pin is good to use when it is not appropriate to install a doorstop into the door or wall.
5. Floor mounted- usually brass. It comes in different styles. It also has a rubber tip to protect the door. It is good to use this kind of doorstop in entry ways; front and back door entrances.
6. Circular- usually metal with a protruding rubber ring. It is mounted to the wall behind the door, at the doorknob level; to cushion the blow of the doorknob.
7. Freestanding- usually made out of cast iron. It is decorative and sometimes antique. You place it in front of your door to keep it open or shut. A good place to purchase this type of doorstop would be an antique mall, flea market, or auction.
In fact, the most common types of doorstops are the solid and flexible spring. The good thing about doorstops is that they are inexpensive and they are readily available at most hardware stores or large department stores. If you are not feeling too confident about installing your own doorstops, when you are in the hardware store or the hardware department of a large department store; ask the clerk or salesperson how to install it. Basically, you just screw the end into the wall or door at the most practical place to avoid letting the doorknob hit the wall behind the door.
